He gives me a disapproving look. “Every woman needs to know self-defense. Do you at least own pepper spray?”

I shake my head. That part is true.

He does not look impressed. Not one bit.

“Aspyn,” he says, and the way he says my name…it shouldn't feel like a caress. It shouldn’t feel like anything. I just met this man. “Not even in a place like LA?”

“I’ve always had…”

“Protection,” he finishes. It’s not a question. “Still. You should know the basics. Trust me, it’s not that hard. Even someone of your slight stature…”

I give him a double blink. “My what?”

His lips twitch. “Okay, I was bein’ polite. You’re short, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t capable of defending yourself.”

“Thanks for the reminder.”

“Just bein’ honest.”

“You know they say sweet things come in smaller packages, haven’t you heard?”

“Yeah, like poison?”

“Ha-ha. Like diamonds. And chocolate covered candy. And…” I wave a hand. “Other shit.”

“Uh huh.”

“You’re a smartass.”

“I’ve been called worse.”

I avoid any more talk about the washer and dryer I don’t know how to use and glance up the hallway toward the final room. The main suite.

I walk toward it, and when I push the double doors open, I gasp in surprise.

The bed is huge. A super king with a plush pink and white Versace bedspread and lots of cushions and pillows. I make a note to send my father’s assistant, Alana, a thank you gift.

She clearly did all of the organizing in this place. I can’t give my well-meaning, but hopeless dad, all the glory. He just picked the penthouse. Alana does all the hard work.

“Wow,” Rock mutters.

The carpet is plush and new. It also has views of the city from the wrap-around windows that expand the entire way around the bedroom, stopping at the open-plan bathroom.

I see it has a massive jet tub, a large two-person shower with all the gadgets under the sun, and a separate toilet. It’s all white with silver penny round tiling on the floor and subway tiles on the wall. The gold taps and matching hardware make the space look elegant and expensive. It screams class.

“I may never leave,” I mutter.

Rock moves over to the sliding doors and opens one side. “Another patio,” he says. “Nice place to have a mornin’ coffee.”

“You gonna make it?” I tease.

He turns to look at me and grins. “I think we’re both gonna have to order in, a lot.”

I turn to look at him. “So, you’re really staying here? You weren’t kidding?”

“Unless Cash changes his mind.”

“But it seems pretty secure to me.”
