I can give him this.

He’s given so much to me. Is going to give me so much more.

I can turn off the heartache for a few hours.

I can let these growing feelings out before I have to lock them up for good.

Have you ever seen fairy lights hung from broken street lamps? Neither had I until tonight. I didn’t even know this cracked up concrete park existed. But Corvin did.

“How did you even find this place?”

Corvin meets me at the hood of the car and slips his hand into mine. Atty and I used to hold hands all the time, but this feels different. More personal. More intimate.

“I had help.”

“It’s Rascal, isn’t it?” I deadpan.

In truth, I don’t have any issues with his friend other than his inhuman ability to act as the world’s most persistent cockblock.

“You have Rascal to think for some of my more sadistic ideas, sweetheart. But don’t worry about him.”

Corvin pulls out a duffle bag he grabbed from the trunk and sets it on the hood. Inside are two pairs of roller skates that make me grin.

“You talked to Atty.”

He smiles back and places one of his large hands on my head. “I did.”

A flutter of wings goes off in my gut, and the two of us talk calm and casual as we lace up our skates. I learn quickly that big, bad, confident Corvin has all of the coordination on wheels of a newborn fawn.

“Oh, this is gold. Something Corvin Morales isn’t good at?”

He grips my hands tight as I guide him around one of the shallow bowls of the skate park. “I’m not good at plenty of things; I just don’t usually do them.”

I smile wide. “But you’re doing this for me.”

“I’d do lots of things for you, firecracker.”

Why does he have to look at me so reverently? Like I’m a firefly caught in a jar and not the impending explosion I truly am?

“Got some romantic in you, Morales?”

He chuckles when he nearly trips over his own feet, and as the sound squeezes my heart, I let go of his hands and skate a few steps ahead. It’s almost like watching one of those ‘fail’ compilations on Youtube, only with every self-deprecating smile I find myself wanting to watch him more and more.

“You know,” I say, purposefully skating around him. “I figured your type of date might be more Escape Room style.”

He grabs the back of my shirt on my third trip around, and I stumble into his chest, holding my arms out to keep us both steady.

“There’s a reason I watch other people play games instead of doing it myself.” His breath is hot on my neck, and his fingers are searing where they slip under my hoodie. “Plus, fucking you on camera with a room full of strangers watching might be a little extreme for your first time.”

First time. He doesn’t say it outright, but I know what he means.

Because being raped doesn’t count.

“If it wasn’t my first time?”

I crane my neck back, and Corvin takes the invitation to rest his hand on my throat. It’s loose. Like a safety blanket.

“We haven’t even scratched the surface of things I want to do with you.”
