It felt wonderful to hold my son, to feel him snuggling against me. My damn eyes started watering again, but you know what? I didn’t care. I was entitled to show my feelings.

“If you go do your teeth and put on your PJs,” my voice had gone husky, “I’ll tell you a story about dragons.” I had many to choose from.

“Really?” he breathed, tossing his tablet aside. He slid off my lap and spread his arms again, “flying” down the hallway to his bedroom.

“You’re a great dad,” Mazie said softly, tears in her eyes. “I wish . . .”

I cupped her face and kissed her quickly. Until we told Asher, I wasn’t going to show him too much of that. “I know what you wish because I feel the same. But we have now, and I’m not wasting a second.”

“Sleep with me tonight,” she said, heat shimmering in her voice. “I mean completely. I want all of you.”

I was still amazed that she loved me, that she wanted to be with me, but it wasn’t going to take long for that feeling to sink so deep into my soul, it would never break free. “There’s no place I’d rather be.” I rose from the couch. “Let me share some of our history with Asher. I promise I know how to make it fun. And then you, my pretty mate, are all mine.”

Chapter 21

Mazie

Ileaned against the wall outside Asher’s room, listening. I wanted to hear the story too.

“Long ago,” Gravor said in a hushed voice I knew would draw Asher in like a butterfly to the prettiest flower, “back when the world was new, the world dragons lived in wasn’t like what you’re used to now.”

“No cars or houses?”

“Nope. No airplanes or even tablets or TVs.”

“Wow,” Asher breathed.

“Dragons lived in caves. They soared across their world, the kings of everything below them.”

“I want to be a dragon,” Asher said. “Can I be one someday?”

“We’ll have to see, won’t we?”

“Yeah,” he sighed.

“Dragons were born from shards of stardust and given more power than you can imagine.”

“Magic like in Harry Potter?”

“Better.”

“That’s a lotta magic. They could shoot fire too, right?”

“Enough to scorch the earth they flew above whenever they pleased.”

“I guess I’d rather be a dragon than someone on the ground,” Asher said with a laugh.

“Me too.” Humor came through in Gravor’s voice. “One day, the world the dragons lived in split wide open.”

Asher gasped. “What happened? Did they all fall into the hole?”

“It wasn’t a hole like you’d find here on the ground. It was a split between their world and ours.”

“Like in the sky? Whoa.”

“Some of the dragons flew through the opening.”

“To here? Where are they?”
