“No one truly knows.”

I supposed that was true. No one I knew would ever believe dragons existed. I liked how he was telling Asher about their past in a way our son would find entertaining.

“Did the dragons burn everything here?” Asher asked, and I was grateful not to hear fear in his voice. Nope, he was as caught up in this story as me.

“A bit. Until they got into trouble.”

“I get into trouble sometimes, and Mommy gets mad.”

“What does she do when she’s mad?” Laughter bubbled in Gravor’s voice.

“She stomps around, and her face is red, but then she gives me a kiss, and I know everything’s alright.”

“Your mom is amazing.”

“I love her.” Such innocence. Such sweetness. I couldn’t love my son more than I did right now. Gravor either.

“I love her too,” Gravor said.

“Really? She’s not your mommy.”

“You can love someone who’s not your mom or dad.”

“I wish I had a dad.” Sadness came through in Asher’s words.

“I think you’ve got one.”

“Why doesn’t he come see me?”

“He will. Soon.” A short pause followed. “Want to hear the rest of the story?”

“Yeah.”

The word came out slowly, telling me Asher was starting to get sleepy.

“The gods saw the dragons burning things they shouldn’t, and they came to this world.”

“I bet their faces were red, and they stomped around.”

“I bet they did too.” He cleared his throat. “They changed the dragons.”

“Did they take away their wings?”

“No, but they turned them into people who could take on the body of a dragon when they wanted. A shifter.”

“Wow. That would be so cool. Like a werewolf?” We’d talked about them during Halloween. “They’re people who can turn into wolves when the moon’s full.”

“Yes, like that.”

“Maybe I want to be a wolf, not a dragon, though I want wings and to breathe fire. Guess I still want to be a dragon.”

“I think dragons are infinitely better.”

“You’re right,” Asher said, his words punctuated with a yawn.

“And now the dragon shifters live in this world, though they no longer burn things.”

“That’s good. We don’t want to light the forest on fire. That would hurt the trees.”
