“Why?” he asked, his lips brushing against my skin. I struggled to form a coherent thought as he gently clamped down on my nipple, sending a sharp jolt of pleasure through my body.

I moaned in response; the sensation shot electric bolts through my body and all thoughts of anything but him deep inside me disappeared. All I could focus on was the man above me. While his mouth worked its magic on one breast, his knee parted my thighs, sending a shiver of anticipation through me.

Using only one hand to hold my hands down, he moved the other down my body, his fingertips tracing every curve and dip until they reached the waistband of my panties. Without hesitation, he freed them from my body. Releasing my hands, he moved his body down the bed. When I felt his warm breath and his fingers brush against my mound, I knew what he was about to do. Oral sex wasn’t something I had ever truly enjoyed, but when his tongue circled my clit with expert precision, I couldn’t control the moans that escaped my lips. He slid his tongue down my folds to my entrance and then back up again, teasing me until I thought I might explode from the pleasure he was subjecting me to.

Before I could scream his name, my release came with an intensity I had never experienced before. Pure bliss and ecstasy and the overwhelming pleasure he brought me replaced all thoughts of resignation and work.

After a long and heated discussion about River accompanying me to talk to Sidney about my resignation, we finally came to an amicable agreement—one we both could accept. I convinced him it would be better to wait with my resignation, and instead I would take an extended leave of absence. I also convinced him he could come with me, but he had to wait in the lobby until I finished my conversation with Sidney. He, of course, wouldn’t go for this, so I suggested Brian escort me instead.

The only real problem I had with River attending my meeting with Sidney was what he might say to him. Brian, on the other hand, I had no problem with since he mostly kept his distance and allowed me to take care of things myself.

When I stepped into Sidney’s office, my breath caught in my throat as I saw Drake sitting across from Sidney, his back turned toward me. His voice was deep and commanding as they engaged in a heated discussion about one of his clients. Every fiber of my being wanted to turn and walk away, but it was already too late.

“Harper,” Sidney called out my name, beckoning me to join them.

With a heavy heart, I took the seat next to Drake, determined to avoid any eye contact with him. But my efforts were in vain when he placed his hand on my shoulder.

“Harper,” Drake said, his voice softer now. “We were just talking about you.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. My composure was slipping, and I struggled to maintain a calm facade as I turned to face Drake with a fake smile. “Oh really? What about?”

“Drake was just telling me how the two of you have decided to work together on the Triage account,” Sidney interjected.

A surge of anger rose within me, but I tried my best to keep it in check as I spoke through gritted teeth. “I’m sorry, but Drake is mistaken,” I said as I looked at Sidney. “In fact, that’s why I stopped by your office today. I wanted to inform you that I have decided to take a leave of absence from the firm in order to fully dedicate myself to Triage International. Mr. Stevenson has generously provided me with an office there.”

As soon as the words left my lips, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. But what was even more satisfying was seeing the expression on Drake’s face—a mix of shock and disbelief. Perhaps it was better that he heard it directly from me in front of our boss, so there wouldn’t be any rumors flying around the office about my decision.

“This comes as no surprise.” Sidney smiled warmly at me. “I think it’s a wonderful idea.”

Of course he would. The last thing the firm needed was a scandal. With me out of the office, there would be no chance of anyone finding out about River and me breaking the firm’s fraternizing policy.

“Good.” I rose to my feet and made my way to the door.

As I stepped out into the hallway, Drake called after me. “Harper, wait.”

What could he possibly want now?

I stopped and turned to face him. His eyes were laced with venom as he spoke. “I know what you are doing and you won’t get away with it. I am going to make sure your employment with Black, Worth, and Shell is over.”

The anger at his threat made my blood boil. No way was I going to allow him to get away with this. “Listen to me, Julian Turner,” I choked out. “That’s right. I know exactly who you are. If you ever threaten me again, so will everyone else.”

I turned on my heels and left Drake standing with his mouth wide open. It felt good to finally, for once, to leave him speechless. His days of bullying me were over.

With a sharp exhale, I clenched my teeth as I brought the car to a sudden halt on the side of the street. “You did what?” My voice was low and biting, barely containing my anger.

“It just… happened,” Harper admitted, her voice trembling. “Drake’s constant threats finally got to me.”

I couldn’t blame her for snapping. I knew firsthand what an insufferable jerk Drake could be. Instead of lashing out at her and making her feel worse, I pulled her close, wrapping my arms around her shaking body.

“It’s okay. We’ll figure out what to do if he tries anything,” I murmured, trying to quell the rising concern in the back of my mind.

“Do you really think he would try something?” she asked, worry etched on her face.
