“Nice to meet you, Alex. I’m Cill.” He enters the kitchen behind Zan. He never introduces himself as Cill. At least, he never did when I knew him. Maybe he’s changed his habits, or maybe, probably, he’s trying to be an intimidating asshole.

“How about y’all take this to the dining room,” I suggest, grabbing a stack of plates and handing them to Erin to carry. As suspected, Cillian stays behind while the others leave. “Don’t be rude to my guest.”

“How was I rude?”

“By just being you, I guess.”

“Why is he here,” he asks after a hefty eye roll.

“He’s a friend and he often comes over for dinner.”

“And more?”

“Hardly your business.” I scoff.

“Everything that happens in the house my daughter lives in is my business,” he says in a low voice as he stalks dangerously closer to me.

“If you think for one fucking second that I bring dangerous or problematic people around my daughter, you never knew me at all,” I whisper-shout, hoping we can’t be heard by the others chattering in the next room. “Is that what you’re insinuating? That I’m the one with shit judgment in others?”

His ruffled brow softens a minute when my blow lands. He’s the one that jumped into a ‘friendship’ with a woman determined to break us up and he wants to tell me who I have a right to invite into my home. Or even my bed.

Fuck you, Cillian.

“Listen, I’m having a hard time here, Isla. It’s not easy to come to terms with the idea that I have a four-year-old daughter. And it stings like hell to see that she already has relationships with other men in your life.”

“She knows the people that I’m close with, get over it.”

His silver eyes bounce over my face for a few long moments, weighing how heated my temper is. This habit of his hasn’t changed, evidently.

“Is she coming to the draft announcement tomorrow?” he finally says, completely changing the subject.

“Yes.”

“We need to talk about arrangements. Does Saturday work for you?”

“No. I have a date Saturday night.”

“Sunday, then,” he grits out.

“Later in the day, maybe. Sadie and I are having brunch with my date.”

“Is your date staying the night?”

“Maybe.” I shrug.

“Hell no, he is not,” Cillian says so slowly, standing chest to chest with me so I’m left with no choice but to crane my neck up to keep eye contact. “You are not fucking someone a few feet away from my daughter.”

“Did you always think this poorly of me? Because, wow…” I push him away and step aside. “Sadie stays with my mom on Saturday nights. It’s their special day.”

Seriously, this guy. I get I’m being difficult but what kind of person does he think I am?

“I didn’t think poorly of you until I walked in here the other night and was faced with my Child Surprise,” he taunts.

“Oh, bullshit. You didn’t think much of me when you were trying so hard not to shove your dick inside your friend.”

He blanches and drags his hand down his face. I guess maybe he forgot I heard him say that.

“Now isn’t the time to get into that.”
