Melody sagged against the back of the door, counting backward to herself as a means of wrangling in the brewing storm.

Wes’ office chair squeaked, signaling that he heard her come in. Melody kept her eyes closed as his steps approached

“What’s wrong, buttercup?”

She scrunched her nose and huffed. “They’re talking about things.”

“Bad things?”

“No, not really. I mean, they’re good, but sometimes they don't bring the best memories for me.”

“Wanna talk about it?” His lips were warm against her forehead and she sighed.

“Yes–no–I should.”

Wes picked her up, bundling her in his lap as he sat in the oversized oval shaped chair.

She tucked her feet in, her toes sinking into the plush cushion beneath them. It curved partly up the side, giving off cocoon vibes. “This is neat.” Melody looked up, noticing the woven pattern her eyes widened. “Wes, what did you do?” She studied the intricate woven panels. He had even carved daisies and leaves into the design.“You did this all by hand?”

“Do you like it?”

“I’ve never seen anything like it.”

“It’s yours, I wanted you to have a space at the house all your own.”

“I can’t believe you did this for me.”

“Sarah helped, we picked out the penguin blanket, too. She thinks we should add twinkle lights.”

“Oh, yes please!” Melody tightened her arms around his neck, pulling him down so she could press her lips to his. “I love it. It’s perfect. It’s Daddy size too.”

“Now, back to the situation at hand. I’d like if you told me, but you know I won’t push you.”

“It’s nothing bad, I promise.” She pulled the collar of his shirt and kissed his chest. I love you. “I miss my mom.”

He hummed in understanding. “I was wondering if all this planning talk was getting to you.”

“I didn't expect it to. It wasn't planned.”

“Grief is never planned. Sometimes sitting in the shop with all of my grandfather's tools will weigh on me out of nowhere." He kissed her forehead.

“You get it.”

“What do you need, buttercup?” Wes brushed her hair from her eyes, crooking his finger under her chin, leaving her nowhere to hide.

“I dunno…” That all too familiar uncomfortable feeling bubbled in her chest. Her skin felt too tight.

“Oh no you don’t.” He leaned in and kissed her bottom lip, pressing it between his teeth and pulling until she squeaked. Wes’ brown eyes bore into hers. “You’re not giving me the ‘I’m fine’ face. Do I need to remind you that if you don’t tell me your needs I can’t fulfill them.”

Melody’s nose flared, the corners of her eyes burned, and she tried shaking away from him, but he wouldn’t allow it.

How dare he understand her beneath words she didn’t say.

“I’m frustrated.”

“Why’s that?”

“Because everything is out of control.” She paused and pressed a finger between her breasts. “Here, I’m full of commotion.”
