Ha. I'd been excitable as a boy. And that's how Elara made me feel. Like I was a kid again, and every day I was due to see her was like Christmas morning.

The past few days had been hard work. In fact, I'd probably worked harder than I ever had in my whole life. Aside from the bar refurbishment, I'd also been organizing stuff for this evening, and I'd even done some basic technical drawings for the first time in years.

The drawings were a kind of insurance policy, in case Elara had somehow managed not to get accepted on the course in New York. Luckily, they'd never need to see the light of day. In a way, it was sad she'd never know what I'd planned. But now that it was clear she'd be leaving, it wouldn't be appropriate to share my drawings with her. I couldn't risk ruining her life.

Preparing for tonight had been tough. "Mostly because of you, boy,” I said to Anthony.

Sensing my nervous energy, Anthony was following in my footsteps. I'd genuinely enjoyed looking after the little mutt while El had been away. He hadn’t been any trouble, and it was kind of nice having him snuggle up next to me in bed. Obviously, I would have preferred to be snuggled next to Elara.

I’d asked Ethan to keep an eye on him while I worked at the bar during the day. My brother had been happy to oblige, keeping him in the back room at the garage, where he got plenty of attention from the mechanics and customers. I think Ethan felt smug about the whole thing. To him, the fact that I was looking after Elara's dog was even more proof that I was madly in love with her.

"There is literally no one on the planet you'd look after a dog for," he'd teased when I first dropped Anthony off.

"That's not true. I'd look after your dog."

"I don't have a dog."

"Well, get one, and I'll look after it."

I'd hated Elara being away. I did feel lovesick. Last night, after I spoke to her on the phone, I'd even listened to some mushy romantic songs. Songs that would normally have made me cringe. I mean, seriously—“Something in the Way She Moves” by James Taylor? What was wrong with me?

I read some more of that damn romance novel, too. Jax was a real jerk. Couldn’t he see that he needed to face his fear and commit to Claudia?

Getting tired of walking the same path around my shitty old trailer, I headed out to my yard to check my setup for the millionth time. It looked good, if a little basic. But that was me, anyway: basic. I was apple pie, after all.

The second I heard a knock, I ran back inside. I flung open the door and there she was, blond hair framing her delicate features, green eyes glimmering.

I'd forgotten how young she was. In just three days, I forgot. How was it even possible that I could forget something like that?

That was when it hit me. I still barely knew her.

"Hey," she said, giving me a small smile. "I'm back."

"Elara!" I pulled her into a tight hug, inhaling the scent of jasmine and lemon. God, she smelled good. I looked into her eyes. "Maybe I shouldn't say this. But I missed you."

"Missed you too," she replied, blinking at me.

I cupped her face, then gently lifted her face toward mine, kissing her hard and deep. Fuck. As I tasted her buttery sweetness, I remembered just why it was she drove me so wild.

She kicked the door shut behind her, squeezing my butt and pulling me tight against her groin.

My cock throbbed against her soft, warm body.

"You're pleased to see me," she whispered, short of breath.

"I'm not the only one," I said, as Anthony came scampering up.

He barked twice and put his legs up on the both of us, nearly knocking us over. We laughed, and Elara gave him a huge hug. For just a moment, everything felt perfect.

"How was the flight?" I asked.

"Fine. I sat next to a guy who managed to fall asleep, snore, then wake up yelling something about his teeth falling out all in the space of about half an hour."

"Yikes. How did you get him back?"

“I told him I found one of his teeth.”

I laughed. "Listen, do you have plans right now?”
