The three of them were alone in the room, but James still glanced over his shoulder at the closed door.

‘You want my honest opinion?’ he asked under his breath.

‘No, I do not,’ she hissed.

‘His face is all squished, he’s too fragile for his own good, and so far all he’s done is sleep and poop, sometimes at the same time. Imagine if I did that? You’d hit the roof.’

Estelle giggled.

‘Our babies are going to be infinitely superior. I expect our first child to be born wielding a shotgun and reciting the periodic table.’

She snorted. ‘Are you going to start playing Mozart to my belly the second I’m up the duff?’

‘Well, something’s got to balance out the Spice Girls.’

‘Oi! They’re the Jane Austen of pop.’

‘Have you told Libby your theory?’

‘Not yet, but I’m sure at the next living history tour at the manor, she’ll get the punters dancing a quadrille to “Spice Up Your Life”.’

James grinned. ‘Now that I have to see.’

The door opened and Eveline entered the room. ‘How’s he doing? Still alive?’

‘Yes,’ Estelle replied. ‘I haven’t let James anywhere near him, so he’s perfectly safe.’

Eveline gave her a look. ‘Maybe James would like to hold him?’

He took a step back. ‘I’m fine, thank you. I’ll just admire him from over here.’

‘Nonsense,’ Estelle stood and held the baby out. ‘Robert needs to get used to his godmother’s boyfriend.’

James glanced uncertainly at Eveline.

‘Go on,’ she said encouragingly. ‘Just support his head and keep him vaguely upright.’

James carefully took the baby, holding him in the crook of one of his massive arms.

Robert opened his eyes and stared at him.

‘Hello, little man,’ James said softly.

Robert cooed and waved an arm.

James held out a finger for the baby to grab, then kissed the back of his tiny hand.

Eveline sighed happily, and Estelle’s heart and ovaries went into meltdown.

‘Right then,’ Eveline said. ‘Now he’s settled, Estelle, can you give me a hand bringing the tea things through?’

‘You’re leaving me with him?’ James asked, sounding panicked.

‘Four minutes, tops,’ Eveline replied. ‘Do you think you have the strength to hold him for that long?’

James raised an eyebrow and flexed his arms.

Robert giggled.
