“So I didn’t kill anyone?”

Uncle David smiled and shook his head. “Winnie smashed the rock against your head, but you hung on to her jacket. She got fed up, slipped out of it, and ran off.”

“Are you sure?” Oliver asked, then dropped his face into his hands with a heavy sigh when Uncle David nodded again.

“You can see that for yourself when the video gets here.”

“How did you convince Colin to send the video? I assume he’s been keeping it for Holly?”

“I showed him all the emails she sent to Remo.” Uncle David shook his head. “The wonders of jealousy.”

Clary and Andrea laughed while the brothers collectively sighed.

Aldric squeezed Oliver’s shoulder. “I told you so.”

Elton rolled his eyes. “No one thought he actually killed Winnie.”

“Someone did.” Aldric pointed at Clary. “I shall not name names.”

Seth ran a hand down her back.

“I couldn’t risk it.”

“I understand,” Oliver said. “Thanks for trying to protect me.”

Clary watched Oliver for a moment before cracking a smile. Though the youngest Anderson seemed relieved to be told he wasn’t a murderer, he still appeared troubled.

Perhaps he just needed to see the video for himself.

Uncle David’s words were enough for Clary, but Oliver didn’t know him.

“What are we going to do about Pete Laker?” Elton asked.

“His house is getting repossessed, and Edward has given him a very appealing choice to move to another state for a chance to start over.”

Clary sighed heavily. “You told him.”

“They were waiting for us in Thailand. What did you think would happen if we didn’t show up?”

“You told him everything?”

“Yes, but he said he wouldn’t tell your grandmother anything. It’s up to you what you want to say.” Uncle David drummed his fingers on the dining table. “But if I were you, I’d suggest you tell her the truth—and fast—before she starts thinking Seth bullied you. Do I need to remind you that she’s very good with knives?”

Clary laughed and nodded. “I’ll call them later.”

Uncle David checked his watch. “So if there’s nothing else …” He jerked his thumb toward the door. “I do have a date, and since I still have the jet …”

“Go.”

Uncle David leaned over and gave her a peck on the hair. “Never put me through this again.” He pointed at Seth. “Take care of her. Her grandmother—”

“Is very good with knives.”

Uncle David nodded once and strode out.

Everyone else gave excuses to get out of the kitchen, leaving only Seth and Clary behind.

She turned to him and sighed softly. “I’m sorry, Seth.” She’d apologized countless times, but it didn’t feel anywhere near enough.
