She chuckled. “Okay. I’m ready. Let’s go.” She side-stepped him, but Seth wrapped his arm around her waist to stop her.

“It’s a surprise, so you’ll have to close your eyes.”

“Even while going down the stairs?”

“I will be right in front of you.”

Her tongue darted across her sweet, matte pink lips. “Okay.”

“I won’t let you fall.”

She nodded and put her hand into his again. “Where are all your brothers, anyway? Only Oliver’s in the living room.”

“They’re scrambling to get you a present.”

She stopped walking, pulling him to a stop as well. “They don’t have to.”

“It really is a present for everyone.”

She frowned.

“Andrea went along.”

“Oh, that was where she was going? Has Elton opened his present? Or the bauble?”

Seth shook his head. “He’s trying really hard to look disinterested, though he was definitely interested in finding out what you got the rest of us.”

She continued forward when he tugged her along. “I’m kind of concerned about how he will react when he opens the bauble.”

“Why? Did you curse him out?”

“I think that would have been a better choice.”

They stopped outside the door, and Seth waited for Clary to continue.

“I wasn’t sure what to write for him,” she said. “So I prayed.”

“Of course you did.”

Her lips curled, but it quickly disappeared, and her bottom lip disappeared between her teeth.

“You’re making me really curious.”

“I wrote that he’s wanted. That all of you love him and want him in your lives.”

Seth’s brows rose.

“Oh, no. It’s bad, right? I thought it was weird because, of course, he knew that. You guys have been through so much together, but I really felt like God was telling me to write just that.”

“I’m just surprised.” Seth ran his hand through his hair. “I don’t know how he’ll react.” He sighed softly. “When Elton was first adopted, he tried to find his biological parents. Holly found them and took him to meet them. According to Holly, who wouldn’t stop throwing it in his face whenever he annoyed her, his parents never wanted him.”

Clary groaned. “I think the note is too much.” She turned and took a step away, but Seth’s hand held her in place even as he logically thought it would be best to remove the note.

But …

What if—just maybe—it might really unknot something in Elton’s heart?

Clary seemed to have the knack of doing that.
