“I’ll just write something generic,” she said.

He shook his head. “Leave it.”

Clary’s eyes bugged.

“Leave it.”

She blew out a breath. “What if Elton throws a fit and moves back to your apartment building?” She sighed and jerked her thumb back. “Maybe I should live in the guest house out back instead of leaving it for Hugh.”

Seth gave her hand a squeeze. “If he’s that offended by it, then so be it. He’s been so annoying to you anyway.”

“So let’s just burn that bridge down completely?”

Seth grinned. “Forget about him. I planned a surprise for you.”

“Right.” She cracked a smile. “Let’s go.”

He put his hand on the wooden cellar door. “Close your eyes.”

She did, so he opened the door and guided her inside.

He shifted her against the wall so he could close the door behind them, and he couldn’t help stealing a kiss while she was cornered.

She gasped, then chuckled. “Can I open my eyes now?”

“We haven’t even made it down the stairs.”

“So no?”

“No.” He took her hand and slowly guided her down the stairs.

The room was still lit, and he had set up his present on the small table.

Seth pulled out the chair and sat her down. “Keep your eyes closed.”

“Yes, sir.”

He turned on his present, then jogged back up the stairs to switch off the lights and ran back down, using the light from his present to guide him. When he got back downstairs, he stood behind the chair and put his hands on her shoulders. “You can open your eyes now.”

She gasped again, and Seth made his way around the chair so he could see her reaction.

Her lips were pulled back in a bright smile, and her wide eyes scanned the dark cellar, lit up by the light that projected thousands of stars on the wine bottles, shelves, and ceiling. “This is beautiful.” She turned to him.

He started the music he’d prepared and put the player on the table before extending his hand toward her.

She chuckled and put her hand in his. “What if I don’t know how to dance?” she asked as he tugged her over and put a hand on her hip.

“Edward told me how you got his wife to show you. From what I’ve heard from you, I’m sure she taught you.”

Clary’s lips curled. “She did. It’s been a while since I danced.”

It had been a while since he danced too.

“Did Holly teach you to dance?”

He nodded. “She taught all of us. Whenever it rained, she’d be in the mood to dance. I think I always held my breath the whole time.”

“Why?”
