Page 61 of It Ends With A Yes

Clary leaned closer to Seth. “I guess he knows who you are,” she whispered.

Mrs. Webb put the box of muffins down on the dining table. “You said you wouldn’t do that anymore. Are you trying to get sent back to prison? What’s wrong with you?”

The man scratched his head, and Seth was sure he saw dandruff drifted down from his messy, curly hair. “I didn’t do anything wrong.”

Seth glanced over at Clary. Her ability to maintain her sweet smile amazed him.

“Then why are they here?”

Clary stood. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Webb. We can only stay for a few minutes, so …”

“Yes, yes. Of course.” Mrs. Webb shoved Remo towards them. “You apologize and listen to whatever they have to say.”

Remo’s chest rose while he plodded over. “I have nothing to say.” He plopped down on the blue lazy boy chair next to the couch.

“Were you hired by Pete Laker?” Clary asked.

Remo frowned. “No.”

“Jimmy?”

“Who?”

Seth’s brows twitched, because Remo looked genuinely surprised.

“Tell us who hired you,” Clary said, “and Seth won’t press charges.”

Remo cast a disgusted look toward Seth. “I wasn’t hired. I’m just helping someone get the justice she deserves.”

“She?” Clary asked.

Seth shook his head. “You have been catfished. Maybe by Pete.”

Clary subtly gave him a light kick while Remo started swearing at Seth. “I’d like to know what Seth’s done.”

Remo looked over at Seth and hooked a corner of his lips back. “He lied and got my girlfriend committed to a mental hospital.”

Seth closed his eyes as he tried to process what Remo had said, even as a sickening feeling grew in his gut.

“You can’t even deny it, can you? You thought—”

“Hang on.” Clary held her hand up. “Can I see a photo of your girlfriend?”

“No.”

Clary took out her phone, and after some tapping, angled the phone toward Remo—all while Seth was still trying to get his stalled brain to work. “Is this your girlfriend?”

“No.”

Seth sighed and laughed once. How idiotic of him to think that Holly was behind all of this?

“Holly’s a lot hotter than that.”

A wave of nausea surged within him, and Seth got up to head toward the door. He opened it and was about to step out for some fresh air when Clary said, “Holly was Seth’s adoptive mother.”

Remo rolled his eyes. “That would make her old enough to be my mother.”

“Yeah, she is.”
