“They’re not the same person.”

While tapping on her phone, Clary continued, “Have you guys communicated by email?”

“Yes. We’ve spoken on the phone, too.”

“Why not a video call?”

“Holly has limited access to devices at the mental hospital.”

Clary nodded. “You’re a hacker. Surely you could trace where the email was sent from.”

“Why would I do that? I trust her.”

“Then check it.” Clary looked at her phone. “Holly Eolenfeld was committed to a wellness center by her father.”

“My Holly’s in a mental hospital.”

“Wellness centers are where rich people send their family, so if a background check is run on any other family members, no one will find any connection to a mental patient.” Clary turned her phone toward Remo again. “She’s here. Track the email. Then laugh in my face and tell me it’s a different place.”

Remo scowled.

“I’ll even throw in a thousand bucks if I’m wrong.”

“You wait here,” Remo said and ran up the stairs.

Clary walked over to Seth. “We might be wrong. It could still be Pete. It could be Jimmy using Holly’s name and story.”

Seth sucked in a breath through his mouth. “Did Pete, at any time, use ‘he’ to refer to his client?”

Clary shook her head. “Not that I can remember.” She turned her face aside, then looked back at him. “When Andrea asked to meet the client, Pete said it was impossible. I thought it just meant his client wouldn’t want to meet us.”

“But it could be because his client is in a mental hospital.”

Clary licked her lips again. “We could be—”

A loud curse, followed by more cursing and swearing, drifted down from upstairs.

“We have our answer.” Seth turned and headed out, fighting the urge to throw up the entire way to the car.

“That’s not possible.” Zane, who was seated on the couch opposite to the one where Clary and Seth sat, shook his head vehemently. “She’s been committed to the hospital all these years.”

Clary licked her lips. She really didn’t want to get into this conversation.

Seth had been quiet all the way home. Then they’d headed straight to the study together and waited for Zane. If Seth hadn’t taken her hand and led her all the way here, if he wasn’t holding onto her hand as if he was worried he might float away if she let go, she might have left the room.

Because this was something that concerned the Andersons. Not her.

But Zane and Seth kept going round and round on the topic. Seth would explain the situation, and Zane would reject it. Seth would explain it again, and Zane would shake his head.

“Ron once told me that people in prison have all the time in the world,” she said. “I assume things would be the same at the wellness center.”

Zane continued shaking his head. “So she spends her time catfishing some moron into hacking into Movement?”

“She might not have asked him to do that. She might have had other plans, and Mr. I-want-to-be-a-hero-to-my-girlfriend took things into his own hands. That would explain why Pete didn’t just admit he was behind the hacking.”

“He just didn’t want to incriminate himself.”
