He laughed once, then walked over and dropped onto the soft bed. “Let’s find something to watch.”

She rested her head against his shoulder. After drawing in a deep breath, she jerked upright so abruptly she almost knocked into Seth’s chin.

He leaned slightly back to look at her, his gaze serious. “What is it?”

“You didn’t tense.”

“What?”

Was it because he already expected her to lean against him? She licked her lips and tried to think about their contacts throughout the day.

“I’m not sure …” His eyes shifted to the side. “I can’t be sure.”

She shrugged. “It isn’t important.” Seth momentarily tensing at her touch didn’t bother her. It wasn’t about her.

And right now, she just wanted to spend time with her boyfriend.

Seth handed her the remote. “Scan away.”

* * *

Clary and Seth spent the whole day together and didn’t get back to the mansion until after nine at night. She had taken a bath and was getting ready for bed when she decided to head downstairs and get some water.

She half expected to see Oliver still playing his games, but the game and the TV had been set nearly aside.

She found herself disappointed.

Clary wanted to speak with Oliver alone. She wasn’t sure what she would talk to him about, but she felt that speaking with him would help her decide.

And she wanted to do just that.

Clary didn’t want to keep jumping between alternatives, and there was only so much time she could expect Uncle David to stick around before he had to head back to Mr. E.

“You’re wearing my present!”

She jumped at Oliver’s thrilled voice.

“I’m sorry,” he said with a cookie in his mouth. “I didn’t mean to scare you.”

She cracked a smile. “I was just caught up in my thoughts.” She lifted her hand to show off the new leather watch strap he’d gotten her. “I love it. Thanks.”

“I’m glad you liked it.” Oliver beamed.

Clary loved Seth’s smiles. She loved seeing him relaxed and happy, and his smiles and laughter touched her heart in a way nothing else ever did.

But Oliver’s smiles? There was something so genuine and innocent about them. He might be twenty-four, but he really was the baby of the family. And though she knew she wasn’t supposed to choose a favorite, how could she not do that with Oliver when he had embraced her so completely right from the start?

“I really love your present too,” Oliver continued. “I’d been thinking about buying it, but Zane was afraid that I’d smash up his TV, because of the viral videos.”

“I’m sure it isn’t the TV he’s worried about.” Clary poured herself a glass of water. Ask him—now.

She sucked in a deep breath through her mouth.

“I’m so glad you came into our lives, Clary.” Oliver reached into the glass jar for another cookie. “I’ve never seen Seth this happy.” He glanced over his shoulder with a bright smile. His eyes were wide with the pure joy of a child.

There was no doubt the brothers loved and would give their lives for each other. But Oliver wasn’t just there for Seth in danger, he was there for Seth in happiness.

His desire for Seth to be happy, his unequivocal support of Seth’s happiness, touched her.
