“I’m not sitting out on this.”

“You have to,” Elton said. “You’re supposed to be suffering miserably now. That’s what Holly wants, and that’s what will buy time.”

Seth poked his tongue into his cheek.

“I want to go, too,” Aldric headed down the stairs. “I’ll drive.”

“Like hell you will.” Elton followed Aldric down. “I’ll drive.”

“Oh, come on. You need a fast driver, and there’s no way anyone will book us with Zane in the car.”

“Elton’s driving,” Zane shouted down the stairs, then came into the room. He handed Seth the key to the cuff. “Don’t let Oliver talk you into letting him out of the cuff.”

CHAPTER 22

Clary had wavered between contacting Detective Murphy or Ron Woznick. Either one would do her a favor, but one of them wouldn’t do it without asking questions.

So, in the end, she texted Detective Murphy.

She was counting on the fact that the detective already had previous instructions to make sure she remained safe, so hopefully, he wouldn’t ask too many questions. She wasn’t asking him to break the law, anyway. She only wanted the names of the detectives or police officers who came in to search the house when Winnie was officially declared missing.

“I thought we were just waiting for the equipment to search the well,” Uncle David said after peering over at her phone.

They were both sitting by the well. She would have preferred to lean back against it, but Uncle David seemed certain the stones would crumble to dust if she did that. If she weren’t so preoccupied with other questions, she would wonder if Uncle David was trying to insinuate that she’d gained weight.

“You’re just waiting,” she said. “I don’t like to waste time.”

“Are you going to look at all the messages Seth sent?”

She snapped her head toward Uncle David.

“I can’t stand having unread messages.”

“Then you’re addicted to your phone.”

Uncle David sighed. “I feel as if I’ve aged ten years since you got into the car this morning.”

“I feel as if I’ve aged a hundred since I met Holly.”

“She’s really one of a kind, isn’t she?”

“She’s evil.”

Uncle David laughed once. “Edward once wondered if she was possessed.”

“I could believe that.”

“He wanted to send her to a convent.”

“So she could burst into flames?”

“She even scared May. Once, when May was putting her to bed, Holly told her she was going to kill her while she slept.”

Clary leaned away from Uncle David.

“Holly wasn’t always like that. She had a really nasty fall once, and she completely changed after that.” Uncle David stretched his legs out. “She was playing on some railings, and she fell and hit her head. That’s why May never allowed you to go near the stone railings in the backyard.”

“Didn’t Mr. E take Holly to the doctor?”
