“He did, but no one found anything wrong. Then he brought her to priests. They blessed her and prayed for her, some even claimed to be casting out demons, but nothing worked. That was when Edward brought her to the psychiatrists.”
Clary sighed heavily. “So what do you think is really wrong with her?”
“Now? I think the fall damaged her brain.”
“But you said the doctors found nothing wrong.”
Uncle David shrugged. “I don’t know.”
She dropped her head against his shoulder.
“Read the messages.”
She shook her head.
“Holly said she has evidence that one of them killed Winnie?”
Clary snapped upright.
“It isn’t all that difficult to figure out what you’re doing.”
She licked her lips.
“You left so … she won’t reveal the evidence?”
“Oliver is the sweetest person. There’s no way he hurt Winnie.”
“Then why are you running?”
“Because what if she really has evidence? I can’t let Oliver go to jail because of me.”
“I can guarantee he won’t if you let Edward handle it.”
Clary shook her head. “I can’t.” She sighed. “Grandma Moretti always told me to do the right thing. She’ll never agree to me keeping mum about this, and I really don’t want to drag Mr. E into it.”
“Holly’s his daughter. She adopted the Andersons.”
“Oliver won’t allow it. We have to do this right. No cover-ups. No gray areas.” Clary fumbled with her phone when it buzzed. “I need to find those officers.” She turned her phone toward Uncle David. “Any of them ever try to blackmail Mr. E?”
“No on the blackmail. Do you want me to get the addresses?”
She glanced at him. “No.”
“Read his messages.”
“Why do you keep harping on that?”
“Because I’m sure you’ll be a lot less stubborn once you read his messages,” Uncle David said. “That will make my job a lot easier.”
She shook her head again.
“I can read them for you.”
“No.”
“You’re not being very cooperative today.”
She replied to Detective Murphy, asking him if she could have their addresses and contact numbers.
