“I told her that Seth stayed with you and was the one who saved everyone,” Oliver looked over at Mr. E, “including Hugh. He even made Zane promise he’d take care of Clary if anything happened to him.”

Clary turned to Seth, and he stretched his neck to the side, fidgeting uncomfortably. “He refused to leave even when I begged him,” she said to Grandma Moretti.

Grandma Moretti went over to Seth and gave him a tight hug. “Thanks for staying with her and keeping her safe.”

Clary bit down on her lips when she noticed Seth tensing up. “All right. Let him breathe.” She gave Mr. E a hug as Grandma Moretti stepped back.

“They’re waiting for dinner,” Oliver said and went into the apartment.

“Are you all right?” Mr. E asked.

“Yes. I wasn’t hurt. All the bombs at the bank were fake, and so was the one on Hugh.”

“I know.”

“Then why didn’t you answer my texts? It’s so annoying that you’re leaving me on a blue tick.”

“Why is yours always gray?”

Grandma Moretti wrapped her arms around Clary. “I’m so proud of you.” She gave Mr. E a slap on the shoulder. “I’ll teach you how to do that later.”

Clary held her breath and waited as her grandmother turned back to her.

“But there wouldn’t—”

“There it is.” She glanced over at Mr. E. “I knew that was coming.” Clary moved behind Seth, using him as a shield.

But Grandma Moretti followed. “I told you I don’t like you working at Safe Homes. It’s too dangerous.”

“Yes, nonna. You’re right.”

Grandma Moretti leaned back. Her gaze roamed across Clary’s face, and then she turned to Mr. E. “Did I hear her right?”

Mr. E nodded.

Grandma Moretti gently cupped her face. “Have you been to the hospital, my dear? Maybe we should run a scan for concussion.”

“Nonna.”

Her grandmother smiled and gave her another hug. “You know I love you and I just want the best for you.”

“I know.”

“So you’ll stay here and keep your job at the bank? You have to think about the property taxes. You can’t expect Edward to pay your way in the world.”

“Exactly how much are we talking about?” she asked Mr. E.

Mr. E merely sighed and put his hand on Grandma Moretti’s back. “Let’s go. I’m sure they have a lot of things to do. We have to get ready for our flight, too.”

“Are you guys still flying off today?”

Mr. E nodded. “I chartered a jet. We just pushed back the timing.”

“And you have Seth to take care of you, so off we go to tropical Thailand.” Grandma Moretti ran a hand down Clary’s arm. “Unless you want to come along. You can bring Seth.”

“There’s a hole in our apartment.” Clary jerked her thumb toward the apartment. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Grandma Moretti peered into the apartment. “Well, then, aren’t you blessed to have a mansion just waiting to be occupied?”
