“I’m sure it’s fine to delay it a day or two.”

“Call if you need anything,” he said while taking out her things from the back seats. “Let the security team know about Ressler too, so they can be on the lookout.”

She nodded. “Zane will be there when you meet Pete Laker, right?”

Clary wanted to join them, but it did seem that the not-so-anonymous text messages Pete Laker had sent were more about the Andersons than they were about her. And she already had a mess to handle.

“Zane will be there.” Seth glanced over at Andrea, who was already standing next to one of the Hayes trucks, speaking with someone in the driver’s seat.

“How many people did you hire?” Seth asked.

“They’re not all security personnel. I’m having them remove the security system and install a new one.”

“How many people are you firing today?”

She sighed heavily. “The ones I’ve decided to let go? Twenty-eight. The rest can decide to stay or leave. Does my plan make sense to you?” She’d run through the three-page-long to-do list on the drive over. “I keep wavering between confidence and thoughts of it being an utter failure. What if I’m just digging a bigger hole for myself?”

He ran a hand down her arm. “Then step back, take a deep breath, and start filling the hole back in.”

“Just like that?”

“Indecision is the worst thing you can do right now. You’ve made a plan. Do it. If you make a mistake, own it. Then work on fixing it.”

“What if it’s so big a mistake that I can’t fix it?”

“There’s always a way. As long as you don’t give up, you’ll find it.”

She cracked a smile. “Thank you.” She took her things from him. “Thanks for driving me here.”

“I’ll pick you up tonight. I’ll come up to your office, so don’t come down on your own.”

“Okay.” She took a step away, and Seth held an arm out.

He wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her back in front of him. “Be careful, okay? Don’t let your guard down with the boys’ club. Keep Andrea close to you, and …” He adjusted her pendant. “Call for help if you suspect anything’s wrong.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Will you keep me updated too?” His brows twitched. “I just want to know if everything’s okay.”

“I can’t promise that. I’m not sure how things will go, but I’ll try.”

He leaned over and gave her a peck on the cheek. “Be careful.”

“Don’t worry too much, Seth.” She cleared her throat and said in a low, mechanical voice, “You don’t want to fall into the dark side.”

His lips curled. “I never thought I’d regret letting someone watch Star Wars.”

She patted him on the head. “You have much to learn, my young padawan.” She chuckled when he frowned. “See you tonight.”

Seth gave her arm a squeeze, and for a moment, she thought he would pull her back for a kiss.

And she was disappointed that he didn’t.

Only slightly.

After all, she was at work. Most people here already didn’t take her seriously, thinking she was Mr. E’s mistress, someone who slept her way to the top. So she didn’t need to be seen making out in the parking garage.

Still …
