“I’m taking it seriously. I’ll be more careful,” she said. “Come Monday, I’ll have a new security team.”

Seth arched a brow.

“It’s the first step of the plan Andrea and I came up with to finally kickstart what I was sent here to do—clear up the mess at EB Co. and do right by half a million customers.”

Clary had only taken over EB Co. three weeks ago. Hugh Eolenfeld had been manipulated by the management at the bank into allowing accounts to be opened without the customers’ permission—fees were charged; credit ratings damaged.

But while Clary was concerned about fixing that, Seth was only concerned about her safety.

“I don’t mind you calling him,” he said. “You don’t have to worry about my feelings.”

“It isn’t that.”

“Then I’ll call him.”

Her eyes widened.

Seth tucked her hair behind her ear. He loved staring into those large brown eyes of hers. He loved how such moments felt as if they belonged only to him. “That way, I’ll owe him. Not you.”

She cracked a small smile. “I’m not worried about owing him. We don’t have that kind of relationship.” She bit down on her lower lip for a moment. “I just don’t see the point in making them worry when it may be all for nothing.”

“Finding out if the body is Gavin Ressler would settle things once and for all.”

Her tongue swept across her lips. “I hate seeing them worry about me. They’ve already provided everything I could ever need. I don’t …” She sighed softly. “What if they want me to leave?”

Seth blinked.

“I’m not asking you to ask me to stay or to fight for me or—”

“Stay.”

Her lips disappeared between her teeth again.

He chuckled, in pure disbelief. Not at how irrevocably sure he was that he wanted her in his life, but at how she actually wanted to stay—and, it seemed, for him.

Not because she hadn’t completed what she set out to do at EB Co. Not because she couldn’t make things right for half a million affected customers.

“I could say no. It’s just …”

“You don’t like to.”

“I’m sorry.” She ran her hand through her hair. “I just—”

“I understand. I find it difficult to say no to Zane, too.” After all, they had only managed to get back together as a family because of him. “Okay.” He nodded. “Don’t call him.”

Seth drew a breath through his nose. He had money too.

He took out the business card from his pocket. What would it take for the DNA test to be done right away?

“You look as if you have a plan.”

“I don’t know what it would take to pressure the police into taking the case seriously, but I could pay for a private DNA test.”

“I could do that too.”

He shook his head. “Let me.” She opened her mouth, but he continued before she could say anything. “I want to.” He took her hand and ran the pad of his thumb across her knuckles. “I like doing things for you. It makes me feel good. I want to keep you safe, too.”

He might be just one person in the long line of people wanting to protect her. But for him, she was the only one.
