“She isn’t down yet?”

“No.”

“I got you guys breakfast too.” Zane nudged three bags forward.

“I’ll go check in on her.”

“Don’t be so caught up with being in love that you forget she’s still in danger.”

Seth stopped at the bottom of the stairs. He updated Zane on what Detective Murphy told him. “I’ll give him a call later to see if I can find out more.”

Zane nodded and stood. “Seth,” he said while grabbing the bags. “Be careful.”

Seth nodded once and headed down the hallway.

When he got to Clary’s bedroom door, he knocked and waited. But she didn’t answer it.

He knocked again. “Clary?”

No response.

Worried, he tried the door.

Not locked. He’d really need to have a talk with her about that. “Cla—” There she was, right next to her bed.

Her back was to him, and she was rocking to whatever was playing in her earphones, completely oblivious to his presence.

Instead of interrupting her, Seth leaned against the door frame and watched her

Clary paused for a moment to smooth down the duvet cover, then straightened and sang, “Heal my heart and make it clean. Open up my eyes to things unseen. Show me how to love like you have loved me.”

He remained where he was, drawn to her melodic voice, yet unable to move.

“Break my heart for what breaks yours. Everything I am for your kingdom’s cause. As I walk from earth into eternity.”

Break my heart for what breaks yours. And what would that be? What would break the Almighty God’s heart?

The God Seth knew was jealous and full of wrath.

To him, God was the one breaking hearts.

The God Clary knew was compassionate and full of love.

To her, God’s heart could be broken by mere men.

Who was right?

As Seth continued to watch Clary and listen to the words she was singing, he felt something stir within him.

He couldn’t explain it, but he had his answer.

She was right.

Seth shut his eyes as Holly’s screaming voice exploded in his mind. All the Bible verses she’d thrown at them to justify the beatings she doled out and the cruel games she played. All the warnings about what God would do to them for their ungratefulness.

Clary’s gasp drew his attention back to her.

All at once, Holly’s voice was silenced.
