“But then it would be over faster, wouldn’t it?”

I shrugged. “Hard to say. First heats aren’t as reliable as later ones while your body is getting used to things.”

“That sounds vaguely ominous.”

“I’m sure it’ll all be fine. It’s just a new, extremely intense experience, and I’m not sure how you’ll react.” I turned off the water and dried her off, wrapping her in my softest robe before carrying her out to the kitchen.

Our grocery order arrived and I brought it inside, pulling out the cake and serving her a slice.

“Dessert first?”

“Of course. The lasagna will take a while, and I don’t want you hungry.”

Allie shoveled a bite into my mouth. “I’m getting way too spoiled.”

I stuffed down the treacherous thought that if I kept her she wouldn’t have to. I could examine that idea later, but it absolutely was not something I could entertain.

“If ever there was a time you should be spoiled with every indulgence, it’s during a heat.”

I leaned against the counter while she ate and she looked at me like I was the snack and not the cake in front of her. Honeysuckle sweetness floated toward me and Allie shoved another bite of cake into her mouth, her cheeks flushing.

“Thinking about me?” I asked.

Allie took another bite. “Nope.”

“Your scent changes when you have filthy thoughts.”

She pouted, that tempting bottom lip begging to be bitten. “That’s not fair.”

I shrugged and put the lasagna in the oven. “You don’t want me to know?”

“No. You get too smug about it.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “That’s all part of my charm. Don’t pretend you don’t love it.”

“Whether I love it or not is irrelevant.”

“Mmm, I don’t think so.” I stepped away from the counter to move toward her.

“You stay over there. Cake is sacred and I need to be able to eat it again after this without thinking about you getting up in my business.”

I laughed and sat down across from her instead of scooping her out of her chair like I wanted to. “But would that really be so bad?”

“Yes, it would! Because I will blush red as a goddamn beet and my mom will inquire what’s prompting the blush and that will make it a million times worse.”

“I think a better solution is to let me get up in your business so much you’re no longer at the mercy of your blush.”

I could see the battle behind her eyes, all those omega instincts wanting to submit while her brain was still trying to wrangle control. “Quit taking advantage of the fact that you’re super hot and a deliverer of orgasms. I have no defenses.”

That unlocked one of my own levels of control and I slipped toward her, dipping down to nibble her throat, my hands sliding inside the robe to stroke her tender flesh until her head tipped back with a mewl, her fingers gripping the table.

“I like that you’re weak for me.” More than liked it. I loved it a dangerous amount.

Allie made a small, helpless sound. The sound of an omega begging her alpha for salvation. “I’m going to emerge from this an entirely different person, and I blame you.”

“Blame accepted.” I fetched her another slice of cake and a glass of milk and returned to my seat, where I strove to be on my best behavior while she ate, though the way she kept looking at me between bites was testing my resolve.

How was I supposed to put up any kind of mental barriers against someone like him? He’d been inside my body—an intimacy I wasn’t fully prepared to process. And I certainly wasn’t prepared for how much I wanted him to be there again. The vulnerability that had been required of me and would be intensified in the coming days was too much to think about, so I didn’t.
