“Both. We need to talk.”

“Okay.” I rest against my headboard, my heart beating out of my chest.

“I have to go back to Nottingham.” I stare, waiting for him to say he’s taking me with him or he’s just kidding, but he doesn’t bother to look at me as he adds, “I’ll pay for your tattoo cover-up and anything else you need until you get sorted. It’s the least I owe you.”

I frown. “What?”

“It’s not fair for me to keep you waiting here when I don’t know how long I’ll be or if I’ll even come back.”

“I don’t understand,” I whisper.

“It’s not gonna work between us, Raven.”

“Bullshit. It’s been working just fine.”

“I thought it was too until I find out you’re going behind my back, checking my phone and texting my ex.”

“I was trying to help,” I wail.

“Well, you didn’t.”

“Are you getting back with her?” I ask.

He gives a sarcastic laugh. “No.”

“I need more than that, Mac. Don’t just tell me it won’t fucking work with no real explanation.”

“I can’t give you a damn explanation, Raven. I have shit to sort out.”

“Did you cheat on Ruby?” I ask, and he nods, still keeping his back to me. “Why didn’t you tell me?” He remains silent. “You let me think she hurt you!”

“It was easier that way.”

“On who, you?” I yell.

“Yes. Yes, Raven, on me, because I’m a piece of shit, okay. Would you have trusted me if I’d have told you? Would you have let me help you?”

“Yes,” I snap. “Everyone makes mistakes, Mac. You could have told me anything, and I would have given you a chance.”

He spins to face me. “And that’s why you’ll always get hurt,” he hisses. “You haven’t learnt fuck all. Stop letting men walk all over you. I don’t deserve a chance. When you find out the truth, you’ll see that.”

“I don’t care about the truth. This is a fresh start, you said it yourself. We can get through anything. You can be a different person. You can choose to be better.”

He smirks, shaking his head. “I fucked my brother’s wife,” he spits, looking me dead in the eye. “I cheated on my ol’ lady and fucked his.” He glares at me with a cold expression. I’ve never seen this side of him and my heart shatters. “Are you happy now, Raven? Can you forgive that? Can you trust me now?”

I shake my head, tears filling my eyes. “No. You wouldn’t cheat. You hate cheating.”

He laughs, and again, it’s without humour. “I charmed Meghan into my bed. I did everything I could, and then, one night, she’d argued with Cain and guess who she turned to.”

“I thought you were close to him,” I mumble through tears.

“I was. That’s why finding out killed him.”

I take a shuddering breath. “Was it one time?”

He rolls his eyes. “You think I’d risk it all for one fuck? No, Raven, it went on for months. I got a thrill from it. The sneaking around, the brief touches while he was standing right fucking next to her.”

I don’t recognise this man. This cold, unapologetic man. “That’s why your parents don’t have contact with you?”
