I’ve felt pain like this before. The way my heart twists in my chest and the sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I didn’t intend to hurt Raven, and knowing that I have makes the ache so much worse. I want to go back to last night. I want to go back to being happy in the bar with the Pres and his wife. I want to be laughing with Raven about something stupid she’s said or done. I don’t want to be here with Ruby, parking up my bike in the same spot I used to all those months ago.

Ace decided to stay in London. I don’t blame him. He had his own issues with this place, so returning wasn’t an option. I place my helmet under my arm and follow Ruby inside. There’re a few brothers around who nod their head in greeting but don’t bother to make a fuss. Why would they? They fucking hate me. My eyes lock with my mum’s. She’s wiping down the tables in the bar, pausing for a second, and then she looks away and continues her work.

I knock on the office door and wait for the President, Deano, to call me in. When he does, he stares at me for a solid minute before pointing to a chair in front of his desk. “Sit.” I do. He’s a big bastard and not someone I want to get on the wrong side of . . . again. “Didn’t think you’d come,” he adds.

“Almost didn’t.”

“I would have called you sooner if I’d known how bad the situation was. I didn’t know until Ruby left for London. I mean, I knew about Meghan and her refusing to get out of bed and shit, but I didn’t know about the baby. I just thought she’d come around in her own time.”

“How’s things been since I’ve been gone?”

“Weird. It ain’t the same without you, Cain, and Ace causing me problems,” he says, adding a smirk. “Quiet without the three amigos.” Hearing his nickname for the three of us makes me feel sick to my stomach.

“How’s Mum and Dad?”

“They’re surviving, that’s about all. I keep sending your pops out on runs, but he ain’t how he used to be. More quiet and withdrawn, I guess.”

“I’ll try to keep a low profile. See if I can help with Meghan. I don’t intend to be around longer than I need to be.”

“I know feelings are running high around here, brother, but at the end of the day, you’re a Kings Reaper. Always have been and always will be. Ain’t no brother here who’s perfect or hasn’t been caught with his dick in something it shouldn’t have been in. You stay here as long as you need to.”

I give a small, sad smile. If only it was that easy. “Can I go up and see Meghan?”

“Of course. You’re in the room next to her. Thought maybe being close might help her.”

I take the stairs to the second floor and find my room. It’s basic, which is all I need for now. I chuck my bag on the bed and go to Meghan’s room, knocking once before entering. She’s sleeping, so I take a seat on the rocking chair beside the bed and watch her. She looks pale and thin. There’re dark circles under her eyes, and her hair is dull and greasy with dark roots showing through her blonde locks. It’s a far cry from the Meghan I once knew. She’d never be caught without makeup or shiny blonde hair.
