“You brought it up.”

“I wanted to know about your life. After you left.”

“Well, let’s see,” I said. “I played for the Puckford Pirates and set some records. Had a great time there. Got a degree in business just to say I got a degree. Then I got drafted by the SOLA Empire. Haven’t played pro just yet though. I’m on the affiliate team.”

“The minor league team.”

“Yeah. I’m getting paid. Not much. But I’m good at what I do.”

“How does that work? Do you get a contract or something? Or just paid per game?”

“You really want to know the inner workings of this stuff, Sage?”

“Actually, I don’t,” she said. “I just want to put my feet in the sand and celebrate myself a little more. Then figure out what’s next here. I didn’t think this through. I’m kind of stranded since you chased away my date.”

“Your date? That guy was not a date. That guy wanted to buy you drinks and fuck you.”

“So?” Sage asked.

That little smirk on her face told me she knew what she was doing.

Teasing me. Wanting me to get jealous.

She always had a way to drive me insane.

Even now.

After our years apart…

“I’m in the hotel with the team,” I said. “We had a game tonight. We won.”

“Congrats to you then.”

“Yeah. Sure.”

Sage pulled away from me.

She bent forward to take her shoes off.

I tried to be the good guy who didn’t look at her ass.

I tried.

Sage quickly turned her head and smiled. “Henry. Are you checking out my butt?”

“Yes, honey, I am,” I said.

She stepped barefoot into the sand, still looking back at me, smirking.

Everything about to happen tonight was probably a mistake.

All I needed to do was make up an excuse.

Give Sage a hug. Maybe a kiss.

It was that simple.

Hey, Sage, listen, there are team rules. I have to get back to the hotel. Crazy, I know. A curfew…
