“I…”

“You were trying to make an escape, Sage. Really?”

I swallowed hard. Words failed to form in my brain to make a sentence.

“What did you think was going to happen here?” Henry asked. “I can’t get you a cup of coffee before you leave? Say goodbye?”

“I didn’t know,” I said. “Anything. I just… panicked.”

Henry let the door shut behind him. He extended his left hand, offering me coffee.

I took the cup and began my retreat back into the hotel room.

“Are you pissed off?” I asked.

“No,” he said. “Just didn’t realize you were going to do that. I thought we had more than just that.”

“I didn’t want it to be weird, Henry.”

“Why would it be weird? We’re adults. We know the reality here. Right?”

“Of course. You have to leave.”

“I’m going to hit the gym, shower, and then we’re getting on the team bus to go home.”

“Home,” I whispered.

“What about you? What are your plans?”

“You kind of just ruined my plans.”

“Ouch,” Henry said. “Was it that bad?”

“Yeah. You were awful. I’ll never be the same again.”

“Wonderful. That’s the kind of confidence I need in my life.”

“Henry, you basically drank from me last night,” I said. “Need I say more?”

“Squirt…”

“Stop,” I said. “Conversation is over.”

“So… how about this weather?” Henry asked.

“Okay, we’re done. How do we handle this, Henry? Honestly. High five? A handshake? Do we exchange numbers and play that game?”

“I love that you get right down to it, honey. I’m pretty sure we can just have a normal goodbye. We can give each other a hug.”

“Swear to each other that this was a one-time thing and totally secret?”

“If that’s what you want, sure.”

“I just don’t want any issues,” I said. “I don’t know why I’m so paranoid about this.”

“You’re supposed to hate me, that’s why. But you can hate someone and let them fuck you. It’s okay. It’s not a crime.”

“Thanks for your approval,” I said. “I should really go.”
