From when we were teenagers until now.

But I guess some fantasies came to life.

The GPS gave its final command and I turned left.

The road ended and a mix of gravel and sand made up the driveway.

My car crept slowly, the tires making a crunching noise. My eyes grew wider by the second as I stared at the house in front of me. A beach house. A large beach house. Not all fancy and modern either. It looked rustic. Old. Rugged. Windows everywhere. An outdoor shower. Like an entire bathroom outside.

The car came to a stop and I reached for my phone.

It was impossible this could be the house.

Henry lived here? He lived here alone?

He…

“Holy crap, Mom,” Travis’s voice said from behind me.

I turned my head. “Oh, now you’re awake. I spent the entire drive all alone.”

Travis pulled himself up between the two front seats. “This is where we’re staying? Are you sure?”

“That’s what the GPS said. But it’s…”

“It’s a mansion. On the beach.”

“I don’t think it’s that big.”

“Close enough, Mom. This place is amazing.”

“I know. Look at those balconies. I think there are three stories? And each has a balcony? That’s…”

“The ocean is right there. Put down the windows. I want to hear it!”

Travis was instantly happy. A big smile on his face.

He pushed himself back, threw open the door and quickly climbed out.

He threw his arms open and ran toward the house.

I hurried to get out of the car and called for him.

“Travis! I don’t know if this is the right house!”

Travis turned. “What? Are we breaking into someone’s house right now?”

“No, Travis. We’re not breaking into anything. We’re in a driveway. Let me just double check… okay?”

“Oh, come on,” Travis groaned. “You can’t bring me here and then take me away!”

I looked at the house again.

It looked so big and so cozy.

Beach house…

I bit my bottom lip and reached into the car to get my phone to make what felt like an embarrassing phone call.
