No idea why I asked him to tag along with me on this insane journey, but he had my back.

“This place is nice,” he said. “It’s big and bright and happy.”

“Must make you miserable, huh?”

Atlas grinned. He stepped toward me. “I’ve never seen you like this, Henry. No offense but you’re usually pretty cheap.”

“I know. This is good. This is… needed…”

Atlas sank his right hand against my right shoulder like the teeth of a hungry lion.

He gave me a little shake as he nodded. “You must really love her, huh?”

I didn’t hesitate for a second. “You have no idea how much I love her.”

Chapter Twenty-Seven

SAGE

My co-pilot called it quits a few minutes into the drive.

I should have figured that was going to happen when Travis crashed in the back seat of the car. Oh, and he tossed in some earbuds too.

Which meant talking to him was no go either.

I had myself, the GPS on my phone telling me what to do, and the road in front of me.

The road taking me to Henry.

What would you think right now? I thought, as though I could just call up my grandfather and talk to him.

I did wonder what he would think of Henry now.

Their falling out had been hell to endure. Watching my grandfather experience the pain of loss yet act so stubborn. Henry being defiant and thinking he owned the world at eighteen. Then again, who didn’t feel that way when they were freshly called an adult?

Their sudden hatred built off of a deep sense of love for one another.

Guys were stubborn.

But so were girls.

I never picked up the phone to call Henry. I told myself I had to hate him. Did I ever actually hate Henry? Not for a second. I was mad at him for leaving. I missed him. God, I missed him so much.

I had no idea if this was the right decision or not for myself or my son.

But a break from the house and everything was going to feel good. Even if we just pretended it was a vacation. A brief one at that. Reality could wait a little while for Travis and me.

It put a lot of pressure on Henry. Unfair pressure. It wasn’t like me to cash in on a promise like this. This felt big. Really big. It wasn’t just me arriving for a visit.

I looked in the mirror and saw my son sleeping.

We need this.

Henry is a good guy… a great guy…

Henry felt like a fantasy too.

Forever a fantasy.
