“Yes. That’s exactly what it is.”

Before the conversation could continue, Travis appeared from the second set of stairs.

“This place is nuts! My room is the best. Mom, you’ve got to come see this view. Please. Right now. Hurry. Sorry for interrupting.”

Sage looked at me.

I leaned toward her. “Fuck, honey, do you really think I want to hurt you or your son?”

I began to really feel offended.

It wasn’t as though I came right out and told Sage I owned this place.

All I did was tell her she and Travis could come stay with me. And I gave her an address.

I let her and Travis walk away and get a few seconds head start.

I told myself I was jumping the gun here with Sage. She wasn’t here looking for something real or serious. She might not even be here for a little fun between the sheets. She needed a break from her normal life. From the house where her grandfather died.

And I was good-guy Henry. Just the guy for the job.

I swallowed a clump of pride and walked up to the third floor where I found Travis taking his mother out onto the balcony.

She grabbed for the railing and looked back at me.

Sage had always been afraid of heights.

“Nice and sturdy,” I said to her.

“Yeah, well, I have a rule,” she said. “Nobody is allowed out here after dark. Got it?”

“What?” Travis asked. “That’s not fair. What if I wanted to come look at the stars?”

“I don’t like this,” she said. “It’s dangerous. You can slip and fall and go over the railing.”

“No I can’t,” he said. He started to shake the railing. It didn’t budge. “See?”

Sage stepped back. “Okay, that’s enough for today. The view is amazing. I get it. Just… please be safe.”

“I will,” Travis said. “Hey, is that pool down there part of the house too?”

“Yes, it is,” I said.

“Awesome. I don’t know what I want to do first around here.”

“First thing you’re going to do is give Henry and I a chance to talk in private,” Sage said.

“Adult stuff,” Travis said, rolling his eyes.

“Hey, kid, the fridge is fully stocked,” I said. “Pantry too. And if there’s something you want that isn’t here, let me know and I’ll get it ordered.”

“This place rocks!” Travis called out.

He threw out his right hand for me…

I slapped Travis five.

I looked at Sage.
