There was a picture frame standing there.

I walked over and picked up the frame.

The picture was of a man and woman with the beach as a background.

A very generic picture. Almost like a promotional picture.

I gasped.

I looked at Henry.

His jaw tightened.

“Wait a second,” I whispered. “This isn’t your place, is it?”

His jaw tightened even more.

My jaw slowly dropped.

So… what… Henry lied to me then?

Chapter Twenty-Eight

HENRY

Sage stood in front of me holding a picture frame of two people I did not know. I certainly wasn’t in that picture. Or any of the other pictures throughout the house.

It wasn’t like I had much time to rush through and Henry-ize the place.

I also didn’t think for a second to tell Sage what my intentions had been.

Henry. You messed up.

“You lied,” Sage whispered.

She looked up.

Looking for her son.

“Sage,” I said. “You know me.”

“Do I though? I just packed up and drove here, Henry. This isn’t your place, is it?”

I shook my head. “It’s not. I didn’t intend for this to happen like this. The way this looks right now. I’m not some psycho luring you and your son here. The front door isn’t locked. Your car hasn’t been disabled. You can call your friend to tell her where you are. I promise…”

“Who is in this picture?” Sage asked.

“I honestly don’t know. They’re just staged pictures around the house. The entire place is staged. I kind of rented it. Last second too. Like… literally last second.”

“And that death machine you were riding?”

“The quad? I rented them. Three of them.”

“Henry…”

I stepped closer to Sage. “I realize now in this moment how this looks. Some guy from your past doing all of this… why? I feel about three inches tall right now, Sage. I’m just trying to…”

“Impress me?”
