Sage giggled.

“Come on,” Keith ordered.

He put an arm around Sage and walked her away.

He looked back at me. He curled his lip.

When Sage tried to look back, he wouldn’t let her.

A few seconds later I was right back to being alone again.

Alone on the ice. My thoughts to myself.

I grabbed a puck and dropped it to the ice.

I gritted my teeth so hard, I thought they were going to shatter.

I took the hardest slap shot of my life.

The puck ended up in the back of the net so hard and so fast that all I saw was the net reach out like the puck was going to rip right through it.

Then I reminded myself of the one rule.

For as mean as Leon was, he had one rule.

For some reason that rule only seemed to pertain to me, and I didn’t know why.

What was the rule?

Stay away from my granddaughter.

Chapter Four

SAGE

Way… Way… Back…

“Just give me the keys,” I said.

“You want to be like this? Of all nights?”

Keith dug into his right pocket and took out his keys.

I felt a second of relief but then Keith held his right hand high into the air, knowing I could not reach them. Even if I jumped, I would not reach. And that’s what he wanted me to do. He wanted me to jump. In front of everyone at the party. To make it known that he was in control. That he was the cool, badass guy who loved to drink whiskey straight and smoke weed and that he had no issue getting behind the wheel of a car and driving.

With me in the passenger seat.

I hated when Keith drank.

That first sip turned him into a mega douche.

He was a regular douche as a normal guy, but drinking put him at another level.

“Scooter, catch these,” Keith said.

He tossed his keys to his best friend.

Scooter was the cliché stoner.
