He then turned. To the left.

No, kid, not that way!

Before I could bellow and try to be louder than the quad, Travis turned to the right. The sudden change in motion took the quad up on two wheels.

“Oh, shit,” I mumbled to myself.

The quad luckily did not tip over, but Travis did try to stand up again for some reason. He also let go of the handlebars for some reason. The force of the quick turn and him letting go of the quad sent Travis sailing through the air.

In my head it looked way more dramatic than it probably was.

In my head I saw him going thirty feet into the air and landing way out in the ocean, only to get swept away by a wave and never seen again.

Reality - he fell off the quad and hit the sand.

Instantly, Travis grabbed his right shoulder and let out a yell.

Fuck - Sage is going to kill me.

I dropped down to my knees. “Kid! What the hell was that?”

I carefully touched the helmet and gently took it off Travis.

Only after did I realize I maybe shouldn’t have. Just in case he had a neck injury. Or a head injury.

“That was wild,” Travis said. “Did you see me? I was flying through the air!”

“Shit, kid,” I growled.

“You just cursed.”

“Yeah, I did. I’ll probably curse a few more times too. You scared the hell out of me. Your shoulder. You good? Can you sit up? Did you hit your head or anything?”

Travis stared up at the blue sky, squinting.

He took deep breaths.

He was quiet for a few seconds before taking a breath.

“Can you help me sit up, Henry?”

“Sure.”

I carefully dug my hand into the sand so I could touch his back and help him sit up.

Once sitting, Travis took a deep breath and shook his head.

“I think that was the craziest thing I’ve ever done in my life.”

“No offense, kid, but the word I would use is stupid.”

Travis looked at me. He looked ready to cry.

Shit.

“But… still kind of crazy,” I said with a wink. “Talk to me about that shoulder.”

“I think I’m okay.”
