“Can you put your hand into the air? Wiggle your fingers and toes?”

“My toes?” Travis asked.

I shrugged. “Kid, you got my heart pounding in my chest. I saw you go up into the air…”

“You should have totally recorded it. I could be a legend right now.”

“Yeah? You want to talk about legends? How about the legend of your mother killing me because I let you drive a quad and you got tossed from it. The legend where she cuts me up into pieces and buries me in the sand or feeds me to the sharks.”

“Are there really sharks out there?” Travis asked.

“It’s the ocean, kid. Of course there are. Are they swimming ten feet out waiting for us? No. But there are sharks.”

“Do you think there are crazy things out there too? Ever see those ones with like glowing things hanging off their heads? It attracts prey.”

“I’m pretty sure that’s the deep, dark part of the ocean.”

“Cool,” Travis said.

“Yeah, real cool. Now lift that arm up. Move it around. Prove to me nothing is broken.”

Travis lifted his right arm. He made it three inches or so before letting out a scream.

My hands grabbed for my head.

Travis looked at me and smiled. “Got you.”

“What?”

“Got… you… as in… joking…”

I stood up. My heart was actually pounding inside my chest.

“Are you mad at me, Henry?”

The kid’s voice was suddenly much younger than he had just been acting.

I crouched down again. “How can I mad at that performance, kid?”

“I think I’m fine. Honestly. It hurts a little.”

“You can move everything?” I asked.

Travis put his arms into the air. He wiggled his fingers. Moved his wrists.

“Give me your right hand,” I said as I stood up.

I pulled Travis to his feet with ease.

“Stare at me, kid. Need to make sure your eyes aren’t making circles.”

“What does that mean?”

“You bumped your head. Concussion.”

“Isn’t that where you die if you fall asleep?”

“Not exactly,” I said. “Do you remember your name?”
