He’s happy here. He’s happy with Henry. That’s good… or is it?

No matter what I did, I always had that small little sting of mom guilt that tried to takeover.

“Mom!” Travis called out. “Henry ordered pizza!”

I smiled and went into the bedroom to get changed.

I panicked for a second, realizing most of the bags were still downstairs.

Then I saw my bags on the bed. Meaning at some point Henry went downstairs, got my stuff, then snuck back up to make sure I had everything for when I finished in the bathtub.

Something so small like that made me feel like a queen.

A blushing queen at that.

I took my time getting dressed, pretending that I wasn’t worried about what to wear in front of Henry. Acting as though when I chose the jean shorts with some premade rips and tears that I didn’t bite my bottom lip, hoping that showing off my legs a little would tease Henry. Or the fact that I chose a hoodie, which at the right angle made it seem like I wore just a hoodie and nothing else. Again, not to tease Henry at all…

My hair was half wet from the tub. I pulled it through the back of the hoodie, then made my way downstairs.

From the kitchen I heard their voices going back and forth.

“But you can get on those rocks, right?”

“Kid, I wouldn’t try it. One wrong move and you tip over…”

“You just need balance. That’s all.”

“Balance. Sure.”

“Then that’s my goal. I’m going to cruise out on those rocks one day.”

“Just not today, kid. Deal?”

I walked into the kitchen.

They both looked at me and both their jaws dropped.

Henry curled his hands up into fists.

Oh, I’m sorry, Henry, something wrong?

“Mom,” Travis said. “Did you not pack pants?”

Henry started laughing.

Thanks for that, Travis.

“I’m wearing shorts,” I said. “How was your adventure?”

Travis looked right at Henry.

“What happened?” I asked.

“Way to give it away, kid,” Henry said.

“Give away what?” I asked.

“Pizza first,” Henry said.
