“Yeah. It’s Steven.”

I curled my lip.

“Sorry,” he said. “Humor is my thing.”

“What your mother’s name?”

“Sage.”

“What town are you in?”

“I have no idea,” he said.

I sighed. “Fair enough, kid. Okay. You seem fine to me.”

“Perfect. I want to do that again.”

“What?”

“I’m not done riding. That was my fault I fell off. I’m not going to quit. Right?”

“Kid, do you honestly want your mother to kill me?”

“Maybe there’s a way she won’t find out…”

“Oh?”

Travis touched his stomach. “Something about pizza that makes me want to keep my mouth shut.”

“Am I getting blackmailed by an elementary kid?”

Travis snapped his fingers and put up finger guns and smiled.

I growled.

This kid was something else.

Really special.

Really cool.

Chapter Thirty-One

SAGE

I felt clean, refreshed, relaxed. Head to toe my body felt calm and happy. I ended up in the bathtub for so long that the skin on my toes became wrinkly. I could not remember the last time that happened.

The view from the bathtub officially tied with the view from my house as my favorite. Something about sitting in the hot, bubbly water and looking out to the ocean was relaxing. For as big and scary and dangerous as the ocean truly was, something about just staring at it gave me an overwhelming sense of peace.

I heard the boys come home and bath time ended.

It ended with me smiling though.

That sense of relaxation mixing with reality when I heard the excitement in Travis’s voice.

I looked at myself in the mirror as I pulled a towel around my body.
