Too late.

I already was.

Comparing their ears. Their hair color and the way it looked. Their eyes. Noses. Cheeks and chins. I saw the way Travis touched his tongue to his bottom lip with excitement for the game as it finished downloading.

“Okay, kid, ready to get your butt kicked?” Henry asked.

They looked at each other.

My heart raced.

“You two have fun,” I said. “I’m going to enjoy some pizza.”

“There’s wine down there too,” Henry said without looking away from the game. But he did wink at me.

Yeah, I was head over heels… just like when we were teenagers.

Chapter Thirty-Two

HENRY

“That’s two,” I said as I placed the controller next to me. “Not too bad, kid.”

“You think?”

“It’s a new game.”

“Is it like that in real life?” Travis asked.

I smiled. “Nothing at all, kid. You’ve never been to a hockey game before?”

“No.”

“I’ll remember that. I’m going to turn you into a hockey fan, okay? I’m not saying give up on your football career though. You can like two sports at once. Deal?”

“Deal.”

Travis and I shook on it and I stood up and without thinking, reached out and ruffled his hair.

He looked up at me and beamed.

“I think it’s time to wind down,” Sage said from the doorway. “You two have been playing for a while now.”

“Henry kicked my butt,” Travis said.

“Wow,” Sage said. “You couldn’t even let him win one?”

My heart sank. Oh… damn…

“I’m kidding,” Sage said. “Travis hates if someone lets him win.”

“Hey, Pops always said you have to lose to win.”

I was suddenly thrown back in time.

I could still hear Leon bellowing those same words to me over and over.

… you have to lose to win!
