I hated hearing him say that and scream it at me. Over and over.

“Can I play some football now?” Travis asked.

Sage sighed. “Yes. Let’s talk rules though. No staying up insanely late. No wandering around the house. No going outside. No going near the ocean.”

“Isn’t that the same as going outside?” Travis asked.

“Are you getting smart with me?”

“No, Mom,” Travis said.

I loved watching Sage as a mother. And there was zero doubt in my mind that Travis loved and respected the heck out of his mother.

“You stay in this room,” Sage said.

“What if I have to pee?” Travis asked.

“Use an empty soda bottle,” I said.

Sage lunged at me and grabbed my arm. “No! Travis, do not listen to Henry right now.”

“Bad advice?” I asked.

“Horrible, dude,” Travis said.

“Travis, you know what you can and can’t do, right?” Sage asked.

“I’ve got it. Let me enjoy my vacation. I could use this time to hit the reset button.”

Sage and I both laughed as Travis stretched and groaned like an old man.

Sage gave my arm a tug and nodded to the door.

I couldn’t wait to be alone with her.

“Cheers, Henry,” she said as we sat outside. “This is heaven.”

“I’m happy you got in touch,” I said. “With everything. And then that other thing… what I saw… what I assumed…”

“You really thought I was married for a minute.”

“For a minute, yes. But, cut me some slack, it’s impossible to me that you aren’t married. Makes no sense. Guys really must be stupid.”

“I agree,” Sage said. “I’m a catch.”

“The greatest catch ever,” I said.

I touched my glass to hers.

She chose wine. I chose a glass of whiskey and ice.

In front of us the in-ground pool changed colors from the LED lights as the water gently danced. The ocean sang to us. It was hard to see the water - just the whites of the waves.

“Heaven,” I whispered.

“What?” Sage asked.

“Nothing. Just taking this all in. I’m not a fan that there’s a table between us though.”
