The last thing I remembered was Henry picking me up out of the chair.

Moving softly so as to not fully wake me.

Carrying me to bed.

He placed me down, tucked me in, and kissed my forehead.

I smiled.

I couldn’t wait to tell him he was the father of Travis.

I couldn’t wait to tell Travis that Henry was his father.

I couldn’t wait to finally be a family, have a family, and fall into this state of perpetual happiness.

It was all mine.

Right there at my fingertips.

I just needed the test results to come in… as soon as humanly possible…

Chapter Thirty-Eight

HENRY

She told me to pick her up a mile from the football field.

It was the last little flicker of daylight and I saw her sitting on an old park bench, hugging herself.

When she looked up at me and I saw that she had been crying, I knew something bad was going to happen.

Better yet - something bad had already happened and now I was going to fix it.

Tonight was not the night for this kind of thing either.

I was the one who had to talk to Sage. I was the one who had something to tell her. It was my turn to… hurt her…

I stopped my SUV and Sage hurried around it to get into the passenger seat.

“I’m so sorry, Henry,” she said. “You said you wanted to talk to me…”

“What happened?”

“You know Keith’s best friend? Tom?”

“I know of Tom. Why?”

“He started a rumor about me. Keith told everyone I was screwing around with a bunch of guys.”

“Asshole.”

“Whatever. I don’t care about that. I care about Tom… texting me. Calling me. Wanting to know when it was his turn.”

My hands gripped the steering wheel tighter…

“He…” Sage took a deep breath. “No. This isn’t your battle, Henry. I have to stop doing this. I can’t believe this. This is stupid. They can say whatever they want, right? It doesn’t matter at all.”

“Too late for that, Sage. What happened?”
