“Him and a couple guys are at the football field. They’re drinking. Drunk. Tom started texting me. Really gross stuff. I got mad so I went to the football field.”

“What the hell, Sage?” I growled.

“Don’t yell at me!”

Her voice cracked.

I reached for her and pulled her close for a hug.

My blood was already boiling.

She knew what I had to do next.

“I confronted him,” Sage whispered. “I slapped him across the face. That felt so good to do. But then he told me he liked that. He liked when I hit him. He reached for me. He… I was afraid he was…”

I had the vehicle in drive and started to go.

Sage gasped and sat back in her seat.

I drove to the football field and almost went up over the curb and onto the field.

Tom stood there, sweat on his shirt, holding a football.

He tossed it up in the air and caught it, staring right at me.

I threw my door open and took off running.

The thought of someone touching Sage…

“What the fuck are you going to do?” Tom asked.

Him and two other guys - Stevey and Parker - were lined up ready to take me on.

I didn’t give a fuck.

I just jumped right into it. Right into a losing fight.

Three on one…

That was okay with me - I could use the beating before I broke Sage’s heart…

Now why in the hell did that memory come back to me?

I really had no clue.

I managed to get plenty of good punches in.

They kicked my ass though.

But Tom left with a bloody lip. Parker couldn’t open his right eye for weeks. And Stevey ended up with a broken nose. He told everyone he fell on his face but we all knew it was from my fist.

I ended up driving Sage a block from Leon’s house.

She kept crying, hating herself for getting me hurt.

I had some napkins in the middle console and I used those to patch myself up the best I could. My body ached that night in more ways than one.

I took Sage’s hand and told her about my plans.
