“Sage,” I whispered.

I had to get to Sage before it was too late…

I turned into the gravel driveway, kicking up dirt and rocks and dust.

I refused to acknowledge that her car was already gone.

Without turning off my vehicle, I opened the door and jumped out.

The SUV started beeping because I had the key fob in my pocket.

I took it out, threw it over my shoulder and ran.

I ran into the beach house like it was on fire.

Running from room to room, already knowing the truth, but holding onto the thinnest sliver of hope.

Travis isn’t my son.

I’m not Travis’s father.

I chased that away.

I ran up the stairs and went into the master bedroom.

The bed was still messy from Sage and me.

I was sure the sheets smelled like us too.

Our skin. Our love.

I looked at the bathroom and shook my head.

I ran out to the balcony and looked around.

A clear blue sky outside. The ocean waves doing their same old thing.

I turned and went back inside.

Up to the third floor.

To Travis’s room.

Nobody around.

They’re gone. She really left.

She must have been so hurt and confused.

Both of us conjuring up and just assuming that Travis was my son.

I sat down on the edge of the bed.

I lowered my face to my hands.

It shouldn’t have ended that night.

Ten years ago.
