That was a chance…

But we were on different paths.

She just landed her first paying gig on her own.

I was… playing hockey…

She wanted to forget me. So was with someone else. Someone who didn’t want her. Someone who never wanted her or her life. Someone who wanted nothing to do with her being pregnant. Someone who didn’t want to know his own child…

Rage suddenly surged through me.

I jumped up, turned and grabbed the mattress.

I screamed as I lifted it, sending it up and over itself and halfway across the room.

I looked down and took a deep breath.

Travis left something behind under the bed.

Chapter Thirty-Nine

SAGE

Alex took my wineglass away and replaced it with the bottle.

“I shouldn’t be doing this,” I whispered. “I should be moving forward. Cleaning out that fucking room behind me.”

I gasped on a breath. Alex sat next to me and touched my back.

“You’ve been through a lot, Sage.”

“I ran. That’s what I did. I took off. Like a… like a wimp…”

“No. You protected yourself and your son after some news.”

I looked at her. “It seemed so right in my mind. You know?”

“I’m sure it did. You’ve known all along you loved him.”

“All along,” I whispered. “Yet I fought it for so long too. Like an idiot.”

I looked down, shaking my head.

I lied to my son again, telling him that our rental time at the beach house was up. And that Henry had to go out of town and he said his goodbyes. I even gave Travis a fist bump from Henry.

Travis was bummed to leave and sulked and napped on the ride home.

At a red light I ended up texting Alex that I needed to talk to her.

I made it clear this was something life changing…

Alex always showed up when I needed her.

And having Mitch here to keep Travis occupied helped too.

I told her everything.

About Travis. About Henry. About the other guy. That asshole.
