ONE WEEK LATER

I saw the white truck stop at the front of the house.

I looked to my left.

The empty front room.

I swallowed hard.

I had said my goodbyes to my grandfather a million times as I cleaned out the room.

Travis helped when he felt like it.

Henry too.

The three of us walked through a lot of memories.

I walked out onto the porch to greet the furniture delivery guys.

The front room would now look like a front room.

Random pieces of furniture… but it still had some flare from my grandfather.

It included an old hockey stick of his mounted on the wall, along with an old black and white picture of him smiling, missing a front tooth from his younger hockey days.

Just as the delivery guys left, Henry and Travis arrived back home.

Both were covered in dirt and grass stains.

“Really?” I asked.

“It was his fault,” they both said, pointing to one another.

“I told you I’m fast,” Travis said.

“I caught you, kid,” Henry said.

He messed with Travis’s hair.

“Dibs on the shower!” Travis said and he took off running toward the house.

I quickly blocked the opening to the front room. “Do not go near the new couch!”

Travis blasted into the house and upstairs.

Henry walked much slower.

“What in the world happened?” I asked.

“Football stuff.”

“Oh, you’re a football player now?”

“Learning. For the kid.”

“You were showing off for the other kids, weren’t you?”

“Just keeping things real.”
