“Your face says otherwise,” Seb said. “No offense to you or anything, but wow, did your eyes light up at mentioning her.”
“I didn’t even say her name,” I said.
“Didn’t have to,” Rome said.
“Funerals are emotional,” Seb said. “Be careful.”
“Careful of what?” I asked.
They all looked at each other, including Atlas and Joe.
Even then mean guys on the team were slightly smirking, assuming whatever they wanted to about myself and Sage.
As I said - they didn’t even know her name yet.
And you know what?
I wasn’t going to tell them either.
“What happened with you and Leon?” Jago asked.
Rome put his hand up. “Oh, I know! I bet our guy Henry here is secretly a dirty perv and gramps caught him with the granddaughter…”
I reached out and grabbed Rome by the back of the neck and squeezed.
Rome cringed. “Ouch.”
“No more talking like that,” I said. “Okay, Rome? Because if you do talk like that again, you’re not going to have the chance to meet your unborn child. And a beautiful woman like Emily… as a single mother… she’ll do just fine…”
Rome stared at me, shock spreading across his face.
He swallowed hard and nodded.
It was rare that the violent side of myself showed.
But for some reason when it did show, it always seemed to revolve around Sage.
In the airport as I stood in line for first class, I heard whispering behind me.
Two small voices debating on if I was indeed the Henry from the SOLA Empire. And then if I was the Henry from the SOLA Empire should they bother me? One voice whispered that famous people hated to be bothered in public, especially at an airport. The other voice said, yeah, but, well, we’re here and so is he… he’s our favorite player!
The word player came out really loud.
The two small voices kept debating.
I smiled.
I was taken back to when I was a kid.
Doing anything I could to watch a hockey game on television.
Working odd jobs to save up money to buy equipment.
And of course there was Leon.
He took me to my first game.
He showed up out of nowhere with a pizza and told me to get in.
