You would have thought it was a little creepy for an old man to pick up a kid like that, but nobody in my life cared at all.

Leon took me to an actual game.

I remembered the feel of it all.

Parking in a parking garage.

Walking to the arena.

Going through the doors.

Having a real ticket in my hand.

The smell of popcorn hanging in the air.

The whole vibe too.

Everyone wearing hockey jerseys, new and old. Some autographed.

And then seeing the ice for the first time.

Standing there at the top of the concrete steps and looking down.

The rink. The goalie nets. The lines on the ice. The way it glistened so perfectly…

Leon spent the entire game explaining everything that was happening and would happen. You would have sworn the guy had a secret microphone hidden on the bench because everything he said was true.

A woman’s voice announced first class would start boarding now.

The two small voices behind me were now playing rock, paper, scissor to see who would bother me.

Rock… paper… scissor…

I turned my head and looked down at the kids. “Shoot…”

They both froze, eyes wide.

“Who wins?” I asked.

Their lips moved but they didn’t say a word.

“Jeffery and Drew, get back over here!”

That was Mom’s voice.

I crouched down. “Better not get your mother mad, huh?”

They both shook their heads.

“Are you two brothers?”

They nodded.

“Do you share a room?”

They kept nodding.

“Perfect,” I said.
