She looked tired. And sad.

All I wanted to do was give her a hug and tell her that I-

The door opened behind her and out stepped a young kid.

“Hey, Mom…”

The kid froze when he saw me approaching.

She has a son.

A son.

Sage…

And he looks to be… what… ten?

Or maybe he’s… nine…?

Which means, what, eight years ago would be when Sage…

I swallowed hard and walked closer to the porch.

“I’m here,” I said with a smile.

“I can see that,” Sage said.

It was interesting looking at her.

Seeing Sage as a woman. As a mother. That was what had looked different to me about her. Motherhood. The changes that brought, plus the emotional side of it all too.

Still with those little hints of Sage as a teenager too.

Just a year younger than me, but that year felt like a lifetime between Sage and me.

Now it meant nothing.

Again, funny the way time did things to people.

“I was just going to ask about a cellphone charger,” her son said.

Sage turned her head. “Check the junk drawer? Where is your charger?”

“Can’t find it,” her son said. “I’ll go look some more.”

The kid looked at me, then hurried back inside.

There’s no way… right…?

“How was your flight?” Sage asked.

I put my foot up on the first step to the porch.

Between me and her we didn’t need this casual banter.

Not at all.
