Her grandfather had just died.

The man raised her.

A father to her.

The same man was like a father to me too.

Leon created what would become my hockey career.

Now that man was gone.

And all I had now was this moment with Sage.

I figured it was the only chance we’d get to be alone. And be genuine.

Nothing to do with her son either.

I kept waiting for the anvil to fall on my head in the form of the door opening a second time with a man stepping out onto the porch. A boyfriend. Fiancé. Husband. Someone with classical good looks, a warm smile, eager to meet me because I was a famous athlete.

Waiting for him to touch Sage in ways that were allowed for the guy but always forbidden for me.

It felt like I stood for hours, waiting.

I finally stepped up another step.

“No need to be shy,” Sage said. “I won’t bite.”

“Just… not my house…”

“Waiting for an invite? Are you a vampire?”

I smiled. “No. I don’t know what the hell I’m doing, Sage. This is a lot. You have a son. That’s amazing. I didn’t know. There’s a lot I don’t know. One son? Two? Three? A few daughters? Husband? Not that it matters. I’m just…”

Wow, Henry. Just… wow.

Sage smiled big. “You were never good and subtle with certain questions, were you?”

“Never.”

“Okay then,” Sage said. She came down a few steps and offered her hand. “Henry, this is my house. Now, as sad as it is, it’s myself and my son that live here. Okay?”

I nodded.

I shook her hand.

My mind kept repeating that after all these years Sage was somehow single.

It took all my effort not to pull her off that porch step and into my arms, where I felt she rightfully belonged.

Chapter Six

SAGE

We shook hands for far too long.

After not seeing each other for years we were already way too close to the border of temptation.

Things were far different this time around too.
