Packed with more muscle than I ever remembered on him.
My fingertips instantly began to tingle with forbidden, secretive memories…
“How about we go inside?” I finally offered. “Instead of standing outside like fools.”
“Lead the way,” Henry said.
“I’ll give you the grand tour,” I said. “Although I do ask you to not judge me based on my living situation. After all, I’m not a famous hockey player.”
“Well, if I’m being honest, if this place has less than three full bathrooms, I won’t be able to spend much time,” Henry said.
“Perfect,” I threw back at him. “Two full baths. One half. Sorry you won’t be sticking around.”
Henry laughed.
I caught myself smiling.
The first time since my grandfather died.
I was always able to count on Henry to make me smile. No matter what.
“This is the grand foyer,” I said as we stepped into the house. “As you can see, it’s about four square feet total…”
“Impressive,” he said.
He pointed to a set of closet pocket doors.
“Is that where you keep the piano?”
I shook my head. “That’s where…”
“Oh,” Henry said. “Shit. Sorry.”
“Don’t be.”
I started to turn and Henry reached for me.
Gently touching my arms.
“Sage,” he whispered. “Honestly, from the bottom of my heart, I am sorry he’s gone. And I’m really thankful you called me.”
“You were the first person I thought of. I know things didn’t end well between you two. I always felt some guilt for that.”
“Never, Sage. Never. You never did a thing wrong. We were just two stubborn guys. I guess you can say he taught me absolutely everything.”
“He sure did. I guess there’s a lot you want to know about… everything…”
I saw movement from the corner of my left eye.
“We can take a rain check on that,” Henry whispered. “I think the now designated man of the house is keeping an eye on his mother.”
That comment made me blush.
“The tour will continue now,” I said. “We have a hallway that leads to both the dining room and the kitchen.”
