The fear in her eyes.

I wanted to kill Keith that night.

For a guy who didn’t get into fights and was mostly invisible, that night made me into something of a legend.

Not only did Keith stay away from Sage, he avoided me at all costs.

Again, that was high school.

“It was a little crazy though,” Sage whispered. “You attacking him. Then in that parking lot…”

My guess was if we had enough light right then, Sage would have been blushing.

Suddenly a light shined bright and we both turned, like we were caught kissing by Leon.

Sage’s son opened the door. “Are we ordering food?”

“Yes,” Sage said. “Sorry. Yes. Pizza?”

Travis touched his stomach and thought about it for a second. “My stomach is feeling… a little pepperoni-ish…”

“Got it,” Sage said.

She glanced at me and proceeded to go back inside.

I followed.

As we walked toward the kitchen, Travis pointed to the counter. “Your phone has been going off like crazy. It’s like you’re famous or something.”

“Just people checking in on us, Travis,” Sage said.

“Can one of them bring a dang pizza?”

“Travis!” Sage scolded.

I turned away to give Sage a chance to talk to her son without me standing there trying to fight back laughing.

The kid has some attitude to himself.

But what kid didn’t? Especially considering what he must have been going through.

Which came as a stark reminder to me that Sage had to make sure her son was her first priority. Me and her standing outside on the deck, talking about the past, that didn’t matter as much as her son.

Sage’s phone lit up again.

My eyes looked for a regrettable second.

Call it force of habit.

A light appeared and I looked.

Checking up on you, my love… my wife…

I looked forward.

Not my business.

I turned back around.
