I told him it was nice meeting him and he should watch a hockey game.

I showed myself to the door and listened to Sage and Travis jokingly debate about pizza.

The second I left the house, I felt instantly empty.

I looked back at the house.

If I had stayed, this could have been my life…

Then again… seeing Sage and seeing her son, then messing around with dates in my head… maybe this was already my life and I didn’t know it…

I slowed as I drove past the old ice skating rink.

The building had long since shut down.

Which made sense why Sage’s son played football.

Obviously with ice hockey you needed… ice.

A million memories flooded me and I began to drive again.

The plan to go to the hotel was diverted a second time as I caught myself driving toward Leon’s house.

I still couldn’t believe he sold the place.

And he did so without even talking to Sage first.

That was Leon though.

Most of the time he seemed mean and maybe he was, but everything he did had its own purpose. Him selling the house like that? Of course he wanted to give something to his granddaughter and great-grandson. He didn’t want her to inherit his house and his memories. He wanted Sage to create her own.

Believe me, that man was the biggest pain in the ass in the world.

And now?

I missed him.

I would never get the chance to hear his voice or see him again.

Foolish stubbornness stole whatever time we could have had.

My hands gripped the steering wheel tighter as I drove closer to Leon’s house.

No matter who lived there now it would forever be Leon’s house to me.

As soon as I saw the house, I thought of Sage.

All the times I dropped her off.

All those times I wanted to grab her, and kiss her, and tell her that I was indeed in love with her. No matter how crazy it sounded.

The front door to the house opened and out stepped a man.

Looking at his phone, hurrying down the porch steps, then down the sidewalk toward the driveway.

In the living room window I saw two little faces appear.

The man paused and waved to the kids.
