And I picked out a strapless bra that worked with the dress.

I took way too long getting dressed.

Either trying to savor seconds alone or avoid the reality that awaited me outside my bedroom.

Of course being a single mother meant stealing those seconds and then hating yourself for it later.

I looked at my phone and realized I needed to get my ass in gear.

I had to get Travis ready next.

Then I had to take that awful drive to the cemetery.

With my son next to me.

So we both could say our last goodbye to the only man we had in our lives.

I was dressed.

Good enough.

I grabbed a pair of shoes that matched the dress and hurried toward my door.

Now I was really mad at myself.

Wasting all that time standing there, half naked, thinking things that didn’t actually matter in life.

I opened my door and stepped out into the hallway, only to hear voices.

“Once you do it a few times, you’ll get the hang of it,” Henry’s voice said. “Going to need to know the skill when you go pro, right?”

I heard Travis laugh. A slightly nervous laugh.

“I don’t think I’m that good,” Travis said.

“Not with that mindset,” Henry said. “No matter what you do, go out there with so much confidence in yourself that people think you’re crazy.”

I slowly crept down the hallway toward Travis’s bedroom.

I saw Henry’s lumbering frame in the doorway.

He turned his head and saw me.

He stepped back into the hallway.

“What’s going on here?” I asked.

Mama bear ready to protect her cub…

Travis stepped forward and I sucked in a breath.

My little boy. Fully dressed in a suit.

My eyes started to get a little glossy.

“Got himself ready to go,” Henry said.

“Except this stupid tie,” Travis said. “Why do I have to wear a tie?”
